1099 Hero Privacy Policy
Effective October 4, 2026 · Updated for the new name (1099 Hero), automatic recall checks, and trip street addresses
The short version
- There's no account and no sign-up. Everything you log (expenses, receipt photos, trips, jobs, vehicles) is stored on your iPhone, and, if iCloud backup is on, in your own iCloud account. We don't run servers that store your data, and we can't see it.
- Your location is used only to detect and record your drives for your mileage log. It's never used for advertising, never sold, and never shared for tracking.
- Receipt photos are read on your phone. They aren't uploaded to us or to an outside text-recognition service.
- A few features send limited information to outside services to work: address search (Google), vehicle recall checks (the U.S. NHTSA), maps and voice input (Apple), and subscription checks (RevenueCat). The details are below.
- No ads, no analytics or tracking tools, no data sales.
- Subscriptions are billed through Apple's In-App Purchase system and managed with RevenueCat, which receives an anonymous ID and your subscription status each time the app opens — we never see or store your payment details.
1. Who we are
1099 Hero ("the app", "we", "us") is a mileage and business-expense tracker for self-employed workers, published on the Apple App Store by Robert E Jones Jr. This policy explains what information the app handles, where it goes, and the choices you have. Questions? Email support@1099hero.app.
2. Information you enter
The app stores what you put into it so it can build your mileage log, expense records, and tax reports:
- Expenses: amounts, categories, descriptions, dates, the job they belong to, and any recurring-expense schedules.
- Receipt photos you take or attach.
- Trips: miles, dates and times, purpose, classification (Business/Personal and trip type), vehicle, the job they belong to, start/end addresses you enter, and the driven route for GPS-tracked trips.
- Jobs: names, descriptions, job-site addresses, start and end dates, and estimated values.
- Vehicles: make, model, year, nickname, odometer readings, and maintenance intervals.
- Saved places and frequent drives (such as "Home" or "Work").
- App settings and preferences.
All of this is stored on your device. It's included in your iCloud backup if backup is available and you're signed in to iCloud (see section 5).
3. Permissions the app asks for, and why
Location
The app uses your iPhone's location to detect when you start driving, measure the distance, and record the route for your mileage log. With "While Using the App" permission, this happens only while the app is open. If you turn on Track while app is closed in Settings and choose "Always", the app can also detect and log drives in the background. That's optional, and everything else works without it. Location data is stored on your device as part of your trip records. It isn't sent to us, and it's never used for advertising, sold, or used to track you outside of recording your drives.
Camera and photos
Used to photograph receipts, or attach one from your library, as your record for the IRS. The app reads the amount and store name from the photo using Apple's on-device text recognition. The photo and its text stay on your phone.
Microphone and speech recognition (optional)
If you use voice input to speak an amount or description, the app uses Apple's speech recognition to turn it into text. Depending on your device and settings, Apple may process that audio on its servers under Apple's privacy policy. The app doesn't record, store, or receive the audio, only the resulting text you choose to keep. You can turn voice input off in the app's Settings.
Notifications
Used for reminders generated on your phone: recurring expenses that need an amount, oil-change and tire-rotation reminders, the end-of-year odometer reminder, safety recall alerts, the IRS-Ready Check reminder about entries that need details, and the "Still on this trip?" prompt. We don't send marketing notifications.
Motion
iOS may list a motion-and-fitness permission for the app because of the location library it uses. The app doesn't currently read motion data.
4. Outside services that receive limited information
Some features only work by asking an outside service. Here's exactly what's sent. None of these requests include your name, email, or any account, because the app doesn't have accounts.
| Service | When | What's sent |
|---|---|---|
| Google Maps Platform (Places and Routes) | When you search for an address (for example, on Add Missed Trip, Saved Places, or a job site), and when the app estimates driving distance between two addresses | The address text you type, and the start and end locations of that one trip, to calculate the route. Handled under Google's privacy policy. |
| Apple Maps and Apple geocoding | When a trip map is shown, when a typed job address is converted to map coordinates, and when the app looks up the street addresses where a tracked trip started and ended (so your mileage log shows each trip's destination) | The map area being displayed, the address being looked up, or the start and end points of that one trip. Handled under Apple's privacy policy. |
| U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) | When you tap "Check for Recalls" on a vehicle, and automatically from time to time to check your saved vehicles for new recalls | The vehicle's make, model, and year, to look up open safety recalls. NHTSA's public recall service. |
| Apple speech recognition | Only when you use voice input | The audio you speak (see section 3). |
| Apple iCloud | Automatic backup, when available (see section 5) | Your app data and receipt photos, stored in your own iCloud account. |
| Apple In-App Purchase (StoreKit) | When you start a free trial, subscribe, or restore purchases | Your purchase is handled entirely by Apple through your Apple ID. 1099 Hero receives only your subscription status (active, expired, or trial) — never your payment details, Apple ID email, or name. Handled under Apple's privacy policy. |
| RevenueCat (subscription management) | Each time the app opens (to check your subscription), and when you view plans, subscribe, or restore purchases | An anonymous ID the app creates (not your name, email, or Apple ID), your subscription status and purchase history for 1099 Hero from Apple, and basic app/device details needed to show the right plan and price (app version, iOS version, country/currency). Never payment details, and none of the expenses, trips, locations, or other records you log. Used only to manage your subscription — not for advertising or tracking. Handled under RevenueCat's privacy policy. |
Things that only happen when you choose
- Exporting a report (CSV): the file goes wherever you send it with the iOS share sheet (Mail, Files, your accountant, and so on).
- Navigate: opens Apple Maps or Google Maps with that destination; those apps' own privacy policies apply.
- Invite a friend: sends a short message with a link to the app through the app you pick. We don't see who you invite.
- Contact support: opens your email app. We receive only what you send us, and use it only to answer you. We won't add you to any mailing list unless you explicitly ask.
5. Where your data is stored, and iCloud backup
Your records are stored in the app's private storage on your iPhone, protected by iOS. We don't operate servers that store your data.
When iCloud backup is available and you're signed in to iCloud, the app automatically copies your data and receipt photos to its private area in your own iCloud account. That lets you restore it on a new phone or after reinstalling the app. This storage belongs to you, is governed by Apple's privacy policy, counts toward your iCloud storage, and can't be accessed by us.
6. What we don't do
- We don't sell, rent, or trade your information.
- We don't include advertising, analytics, or third-party tracking tools in the app.
- We don't track you across other companies' apps or websites.
- We don't require an account, and we don't ask for your name, email, or phone number to use the app.
- We don't process, receive, or store your payment information. All billing is handled by Apple.
7. Keeping and deleting your data
- Your data stays on your device until you delete it. You can delete individual expenses, trips, and jobs in the app, or erase everything with Settings › Clear all data.
- Deleting the app removes the data stored on your phone.
- To delete your iCloud backup, go to your iPhone's Settings › [your name] › iCloud and manage the storage used by 1099 Hero.
- Reports you've exported are copies. Delete them wherever you saved or sent them.
- RevenueCat keeps the anonymous subscription record described in section 4 (your anonymous ID and 1099 Hero purchase history) so your subscription keeps working and can be restored. It isn't linked to your name or email. To ask for it to be deleted, email us.
8. Your choices
- You can change or revoke location, camera, photos, microphone, speech recognition, and notification permissions at any time in your iPhone's Settings app. Background location is optional and off unless you turn it on.
- You can turn off automatic trip detection and voice input in the app's Settings.
- Because we don't hold your data on our servers, there's nothing for us to access, correct, or delete on your behalf, apart from the anonymous subscription record RevenueCat keeps (section 7). You control it on your device and in your iCloud account. If you have a question or request about your privacy, including under U.S. state privacy laws or the GDPR, email us and we'll respond.
9. Security
Your data is protected by your iPhone's built-in security (your passcode, Face ID or Touch ID, and iOS data protection) and, for backups, by Apple's iCloud security. Information sent to the outside services above is sent over encrypted HTTPS connections.
10. Children
1099 Hero is a business tool meant for adults. It isn't directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from children.
11. Tax information
The app organizes your records and calculates deductions using published IRS rates and rules, but it doesn't send anything to the IRS or any tax authority. You decide what to share with your tax professional.
12. Changes to this policy
1099 Hero is offered as a subscription with a free trial. Billing is handled by Apple, and the subscription is managed with RevenueCat, as described in sections 4, 6, and 7.
If the app starts handling information differently, we'll update this policy and change the effective date above before those changes take effect. For significant changes, we'll also tell you in the app.
13. Contact
Email support@1099hero.app with any questions about this policy or your information.
