Frequently asked questions

How does automatic trip tracking work?

While the app is open, 1099 Hero stays in a low-power mode until it sees that you're actually driving, then switches to full GPS for the trip. When you stop, the trip is saved with the miles, the route, and where it started and ended.

Want trips caught even when you forget to open the app first? Turn on Background Tracking in Settings. It uses the same battery-friendly approach.

What permissions does the app need, and why "Always" location?

Location is how the app measures your drives. With "While Using the App," trips are tracked while 1099 Hero is open.

"Always" is only needed if you turn on Background Tracking, so the app can catch a drive when it's closed. iPhone only lets an app notice that you've started driving in the background if you choose "Always." It's optional, and you can turn it off anytime in Settings. Your location is only used to record your drives. It's never used for ads and never sold.

Motion & Fitness (optional) helps the app tell driving apart from walking or biking, and start trips sooner. It stays on your phone.

Camera is for snapping receipts, and notifications are for reminders like "Still on this trip?" and entries that need details.

How do I mark a trip as Business or Personal?

In your trip list, swipe a trip right for Business or left for Personal. You can also tap the trip to open it and choose there.

Business trips need a business purpose (for example, "Estimate at the Smith job"). The IRS expects one for every business mile, so the app will remind you if it's missing.

What is the IRS-Ready Check?

It looks through your business trips and expenses and lists any that are missing an amount, date, place, or business purpose. Tap one to fill in what's missing. It's an easy way to catch gaps before tax time. It doesn't file anything or send anything to the IRS.

How do backups work?

Everything is stored on your phone and also backed up automatically to your own iCloud account: trips, expenses, receipt photos, jobs, vehicles, categories, and settings. There's nothing to turn on. You just need to be signed in to iCloud on your iPhone. Settings › iCloud backup shows when it last ran.

We never see your backup. It lives in your iCloud, not on our servers.

What happens if I get a new phone?

Sign in to your new iPhone with the same Apple ID, install 1099 Hero, and open it. The app will offer to restore your data from your iCloud backup instead of starting blank. The same works if you delete and reinstall the app.

You can also use Reports › Download CSV anytime to keep your own copy or send your records to your tax professional.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Subscriptions are handled by Apple, so you cancel on your iPhone:

Open the Settings app › tap your name at the top › Subscriptions › 1099 Hero › Cancel Subscription.

Deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. If you cancel during the free trial, you won't be charged. For refunds, Apple handles those at reportaproblem.apple.com.

How do I contact support?
